A method is presented to predict theoretically the increase of temperature due to wind-recirculation in the inlet of a VTOL lift engine exhausting normally to the ground. It is shown how to calculate with the potential-theory the velocities in the recirculation flow and how to determine the temperatures with the laws of spread of buoyant plumes. Many model-investigations are done to check these results. During this, the three regions of a VTOL propulsion jet, the free jet, the wall jet, and the zone of separation of the wall jet from the ground, due to wind effects and buoyancy forces are investigated at model-jets with critical nozzle pressure ratio and temperatures up to 1000 C.
