The report summarizes the findings of an experiment conducted at the Federal Highway Administration's Maine Facility to examine the relative effectiveness of roadside signs and vehicle markings for warning motorists of the presence of a slow-moving vehicle on the road ahead in a rural two-lane situation. The principal finding was that the use of standard four-way flashers is an effective device for reducing the hazardousness of the overtaking situation relative to reaction distance, speed reduction, and vehicle following characteristics. The effects of the roadside signs were positive in the vicinity of the sign placement (out of sight of the slow-moving vehicle), but there was no lasting effects relative to the actual overtaking maneuver.
