The report summarizes results of an experimental study to determine the ultimate strength of ship hull box girders. Two models were tested, the first model was designed and constructed representing a typical single bottom tanker under bending condition. The second model was designed in an attempt to produce different modes of failure, such as plate buckling between stiffeners, instability of longitudinal stiffeners and overall grillage instability. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental results of the two tests is presented, as well as a number of possible reasons for the discrepancy between theoretical and experimental results.
