Sixteen field tests were performed by Wyle Laboratories, Colorado Springs to measure the performance characteristics of a Type I freight car truck. Reel 12 contains test run 12a. (When more than one try was required to obtain a successful run it is denoted with a letter suffix.) A pair of ASF ride control trucks were placed under an empty 100-ton open hopper carbody. New AAR 1/20 wheel profiles were used. The object of the test was to provide performance data during curve negotiation. The test was performed on March 3, 1980 on Union Pacific track near Las Vegas, Nevada. Ninety-six channels of data were acquired to measure car speed, automatic location detection, lateral/vertical wheel-rail forces, wheel/rail angle of attack, axle rotation position, accelerations and displacements at critical points on the truck and carbody. This test run was made over mainline curved track between Arden and Sloan near Las Vegas, Nevada. The test consist was run through a series of eleven left and right curves ranging from 2 to 6 degrees of curvature. The test was run in an uphill direction with a grade of approximately 1%. The test was run at speeds 7 mph above equilibrium speed for each curve in the test zone. Actual speed varied from 41 mph to 55mph for the test run. At the completion of the test run a controlled sequence of trainline brake application was applied to characterize performance during braking.
