This Coding Manual contains instructions for coding accident data from police accident reports for the General Estimates System (GES). GES is currently the main database used by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to produce national statistics on nonfatal accidents in the United States. GES data are based on an annual sample of about 50,000 police accident reports.
