There is a lack of precise information on the effectiveness of specific methods in generating optimum designs for realistic aircraft structures. In this situation it is difficult for designers to make decisions on which systems to employ for a given design problem and which developments to pursue. Thus it is necessary for designers to be aware of the relative merits of the different methods currently used for the design optimization of advanced aircraft. This Lecture Series covers the methods available for the computer based design analysis. and design optimisation of aircraft structures. The Lecture Series deals with the principles and practices adopted to integrate the various factors which are considered in the design of advanced aircraft. These factors include: structural shape, aerodynamics, active control technology and aircraft performance. Realistic case studies are used to illustrate the methods used for different design problems. The following topics are covered in detail: Overview of integrated design analysis, background, methods, objectives and requirements. Optimisation in design (CAE/CAD). A system approach to aircraft optimisation. Case studies for different design problems. This Lecture Series, sponsored by the Structures and Materials Panel of AGARD, has been implemented by the Consultant and Exchange Programme.
