Energy considerations are used to show that the scramjet is a potentially efficient power plant for hypersonic propulsion. Performance analysis methods can be used to obtain the detailed performance provided accurate component performance can be specified. The integration of the engine with the airframe is shown to be essential at hypersonic speeds and a viable design seems feasible. The vehicles should be capable of long-range cruise or boost missions. The design problems of the various engine components are considered individually. (Author)
