Investigation of five cowl-inlet configurations was made in altitude wind tunnel to determine effect of propeller spinners and increased inlet diameters on cooling air pressures at cowl inlet and at face of engine and on drag and critical speed of cowl. Cooling-air pressures at cowl inlet were greater for a 43-inch diameter inlet further increases pressure at face of engine, whereas addition of 32-inch diameter spinner to same inlet did not effect pressure. Cooling drag installation with 43-inch diameter was considerably less than with a 38-1/2 by 35-inch oval inlet.
