This report presents a discussion of research into the performance and fuel economies of heavy-duty standard size and articulated transit buses being marketed in the United States. The research methodology consisted of using a digital computer simulation that was based on and calibrated against actual test and operational data over the past 7 years. The computer model utilized bus power train data furnished by the transit bus manufacturers, without verification or proof, and exercised the buses over six simulated routes or duty cycles. Computer-generated fuel economy and performance results for the manufacturer's specified baseline bus, a fuel-efficient bus version, and a performance bus version were selected for presentation in a matrix format in the Bus Equipment Selection Handbook. This handbook is suitable for use by transit property managers in comparing the relative performance of different bus configurations operated under the same conditions.
