Results of a study on the symmetric motions during automatic landing of a medium large airliner (BAC-Super VC 10), are presented. The setting of an automatic pilot for such an aircraft was investigated with an analog computer. It appears that the open loop character of the control should be taken into account. The effect of variations in aircraft and flight state on the two most important parameters for landing, i.e., the location of the touchdown point and the descent velocity at the moment the wheels touch the ground, was examined. The effect of atmospheric turbulence was not considered. The effect of wind and wind gradient was studied and compared with British and American airworthiness specifications.
