When designing fender structures, dolphins, jetties, etc. it is necessary to know which forces and displacements occur due to the impact of ships (mooring procedure, collision). The first part of the paper concerns inland navigation and describes the behavior of ships near fender structures and the properties of dolphins. The second part of this paper concerns the determination of impact forces for inland and sea-going navigation where the influence of the water is emphasized. The treatment of the ship/fender system and the ship/water system results in two methods of approach to the problem.
