The purpose of this work was to determine the feasibility of a hybrid rocket (liquid oxidizersolid fuel) for potential application in emergency escape systems of advanced aerospace vehicles. High performance and high temperature storage capability were the primary feasibility objectives set forth for the escape rocket. Development of principles and establishment of parameters necessary to the design of a prototype hybrid escape rocket were program goals. Thermodynamic calculations of various fuel-oxidizer combinations were performed on a computer in order that optimum propellant systems could be formulated and investigated. Theoretical performance curves were plotted from the computer values. The fuels contained aluminum and magnesium powders in combination with four binder materials. The oxidizers considered were nitrogen tetroxide and red fuming nitric acid. (Author)
