One of the problems that still face aeronautical medical specialists in the present state of space research is the amount of heat load a pilot can withstand. There are limits to the extent that protective devices against nonphysiological heat loads are practicable, since their weight and volume entail reduced performance of the vehicle. This fact makes it specially important to ascertain the climatic conditions that do not prejudice the efficiency of the crew in such a vehicle. Likewise it is necessary that the subject's heat withstanding capacity should be taken into account even in aptitude tests. Finally, heat load plays an important part in 'space training', in so far as acclimatisation enables the load limits to be raised. (Author)
