The aim of the research is to find representations or models of traffic flow which describe 'real world' phenomena. There exist a number of deterministic models which have been suggested as descriptions of various traffic situations. These include single and multi-lane flow, passing, and optimal margining procedures. Emphasis in this study has been almost exclusively upon car-following models. The report discusses general aspects of traffic theory with initial comments limited to some of the variables and requirements involved, the rudiments of feedback control theory, and the formulations of a number of car-following models. Emphasis is upon feedback control theory, stability analysis, and utilization of the Continuous System Modeling Program (CSMP) to solve the dynamic equations of single- and multiple-sense, linear and non-linear car-following models.
