The author considers the question of whether combat service support units in a corps rear area are prepared to neutralize or defeat the Soviet rear area threat. This essay examines two deficiencies with current rear battle doctrine and proposes alternatives. The deficiencies include the use of the Rear Area Operations Center (AOC) and the combat service support units' lack of sufficient fire power and mobility for self defense. A critical assessment is made of the extensive Soviet threat to the corps rear area. The conclusion is presented that the Rear Battle doctrine is sound. However, combat service support units are in need of additional training and equipment to cope with the threat. Suggestions are given on additional ways to counter the threat.
