The Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety (BMCS) is responsible for establishing minimal health requirements which disqualify interstate commercial drivers for safety reasons as part of its responsibility for regulating the safety of motor carrier operations. Standardization and adequate dissemination of the rules, guidelines, and positions developed by the BMCS are essential to full implementation by medical examiners, the motor carrier industry, the unions, and the individual drivers. In an effort to improve existing regulations, define relationships, and furnish meaningful guidelines, the BMCS established the need for an evaluative study and a guide to assist examining physicians and others connected with medical fitness requirements of drivers. The present study was designed to satisfy that need.
