There were 205.7 million licensed drivers in the United States in 2007 (2008 data not available). Young drivers, between 15 and 20 years old, accounted for 6.4 percent (13.2 million) of the total, a 4.8-percent increase from the 12.6 million young drivers in 1997. In 2008, 5,864 15- to 20-year-old drivers were involved in fatal crashes a 27-percent decrease from the 7,987 involved in 1998.
