Because of the increase in the complexity of avionics, future aircraft will require a high rate of data transmission and immunity from electrical interference including lightening. Fiber optics is an attractive data transfer medium for aircraft application due to its high data rate capability and inherent resistance to EMI and lightening. Fiber optics also provides small size, light weight and absence of signal crosstalk. A star-coupled fiber optic data bus has been designed and fabricated. Using this, environmental testing, installation testing and flight testing when installed in the MU-300 were performed and these indicate that a fiber optic data bus is feasible for use in aircraft avionics systems.
