Although railroads have been shown to be the lowest polluter of the environment among the major modes of transportation, a study was completed in early 1972 to exemplify the composition and quality of exhaust emissions from diesel-electric locomotives. The exhaust gas components-carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and unburned hydro-carbons--were found to vary with engine type, method of air supply, and engine load. In attempting to evaluate visible emissions, however, available instrumentation was generally ineffective. The study indicated that additional research is required to provide a more exact basis for characterizing exhaust emissions from current railroad diesel engines. (Modified author abstract)
