The subject of this report is the relationship between land-use patterns, particularly town shape, size and population density, and travel for all purposes, based in part on modelling using the LUTE model of walking, car and bus travel. The results reported are intended to be of interest to planners wishing to evaluate the travel and accessibility consequences of alternative development patterns and densities, to transport planners seeking an understanding of the interactions between competing modes so as to be able to achieve a high level of accessibility within existing settlements, and to public transport operators concerned with optimising public transport provision at a time of rising operating costs, falling patronage and uncertain revenue support.
