The Survival Support Device (SSD) is a vessel containing compressed air with a clear plastic hood and a regulating valve. The device is intended to facilitate breathing by personnel while evacuating a smoke or fume filled compartment aboard ship. Based on the relatively high internal pressure of the compressed air, restriction was placed on the commercial shipment of the SSD's by the Department of Transportation. The Naval Weapons Handling Center (NWHC) was tasked to develop a suitable shipping configuration for these devices which would minimize potential hazards to personnel and objects in the event of a failure. In conjunction with the Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Facility (NAVEODFAC), Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, Maryland, a means of failure simulation was devised. Concurrently, a packaging design was initiated at NWHC based on the predicted failure mode. On 1 April 1980 tests of fully pressurized SSD's were conducted at NAVEODFAC. Based on successful test results, NAVSEASYSCOM issued a Certification Control Number permitting commercial shipments of the SSD. (Author)
