Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) undertaken by the BTS and the Bureau of the Census, reports the value, weight, mode, and distance transported of commodities shipped by manufacturing, mining, wholesale trade, and selected retail and service industries in 1993. The 1993 CFS covers both local and intercity freight movements; identifies parcel, post, and courier as a separate mode of transportation; includes freight movement between coastal ports, which is often ignored in other data sources; and estimates for the first time freight carried by intermodal combinations of carriers. The 1993 CFS also reports commodities that are shipped in containers, commodities that are hazardous materials, and those shipments that were exports. Commissioned by the BTS, the Bureau of the Census collected data from approximately 200,000 business establishments in the U.S., selected by geographic location and industry. Census collected the data for each quarter of 1993 and the total sample was approximately 12 million shipments.
