Recent research has indicated the possibility that with reduced power unit noise, tire to road surface noise could become the predominant source of lorry noise. An investigation at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory has shown that, although tire noise does not contribute and is unlikely to contribute significantly to levels measured in the British Standard drive-by-test, tire road surface noise will be the predominant source of noise from envisaged quieter heavy lorries when they are traveling at speeds approaching 100 km/h on dry roads and at speeds over 50 km/h on wet roads. The parameters that most markedly affect tire noise are vehicle speed, tire tread pattern, road surface texture and whether the surface is wet or dry. (Author)
