Technical considerations associated with a low altitude satellite (LAS) operating in conjunction with a data relay satellite system (DRSS) are investigated. The impact of providing the capability of transmitting data to and receiving from a system of DRSS on the spacecraft design is studied with emphasis on antenna pointing, antennas, communication system, and attitude control. Potential applications for LAS-DRSS are discussed in order to develop ranges for parameters associated with various spacecraft systems such as communication, control, and power systems. Results of analysis and trade studies dealing with LAS-DRSS communication and LAS subsystems are presented.
