The changed air combat characteristics and fighter design criteria, resulting from weapons development, are treated. Manned and computerized air combat simulations, and fighter design analyses were performed. The results indicate that in short range combat the emphasis is shifting to attained turn rates and small radii of turn, and that high speed maneuverability is of particular importance in medium range combats. Significant improvement in short range combat effectiveness can be expected from tactical maneuvers including the penetration into the post-stall flight regime. A set of maneuverability design criteria is proposed.
