The symposium comprised seven sessions as follows: (1) Performance of Future Fighter Aircraft, which consisted of two papers describing those features of future fighter aircraft such as the Mirage 2000, the F-16, the F-18, and the Tornado. (2) Medical Selection: General, comprised two papers which presented an overview present medical selection procedures with emphasis on those used for fighter aircrew. (3) Medical Selection: Cardiovascular Aspects, covered the detection and prediction of cardiovascular disease and the cardiovascular effects of high sustained acceleration. It included a very valuable presentation the way ahead with respect to these aspects of the selection and retention of the pilots of high performance aircraft. (4) Medical Selection: Vision Aspects, reviewed important aspects of vision, in particular target acquisition and use of coloured displays, and the vision standards which are required of pilots operating high performance fighter aircraft. (5) Medical Selection: The Spinal Column, considered the hazards to the neck and the cervical portion of the spinal cord produced by the high acceleration environment and disucssed methods of detection and avoidance of cervical vertebral disease. (6) Medical Selection and Training: Physical Fitness, dealt with the assessment of physical fitness in aircrew and its relation to performance in flight. (7) Physiological training which should be provided to aircrew with emphasis upon those who are to operate high performance combat aircraft.
