The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) enlisted the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to aid in the development of laboratory test procedures to be used in an amended version of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 201. This new test procedure could be used in the evaluation of dynamic side-impact protection systems (e.g., air bags). A test methodology was produced from four crash tests between 1995 Honda Accord LX four-door sedans and the FOIL 300K rigid pole (test numbers 97S003, 97S004, 97S005, 97S006), referenced in this report. Once the test procedures were established, three additional broadside crash tests were conducted to demonstrate the practicality and feasibility of the new test procedures. The report documents the test procedures and test results from the first in the series between the 1994 Ford Explorer XLT and the FOIL 400K instrumented rigid pole. This report (FHWA-RD-98-150) contains test data, photographs taken with high-speed film, and a summary of the test results.
