The FY 1974 Navigation Season Extension Demonstration Program is part of a three-year program to demonstrate the practicability of extending the commercial navigation season on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. Methods investigated for the purpose of extending the navigation season include bubbler systems, ice breaking activities, ice retarding heat additives in the form of power plant heat rejections and ice stabilization and retention structures. Also investigated are modifications to vessels to increase ice navigation capabilities and various types of navigational aids to permit safer navigation during winter weather conditions. Environmental impacts are discussed.
