In October 1981, the Loads Advisory Committee of the Committee on Marine Structures developed the principal ideas of the design-inspection-redundancy symposium. The degree of fail-safe redundancy (in terms of multiple load paths) and element ductility that have been incorporated into the design of a structure has important implications in terms of its tolerance for flaws and/or overloads, and influences the strategies that may be adapted for inspection and repair throughout the life of the structure. To examine these relationships properly in more detail, and in terms of their implications on structural reliability, twenty-three technical papers were developed. These papers and the prepared and extemporaneous discussions developed during the symposium constitute the material for the volume.
