The applications study program was directed toward derivation of conceptdefinitions of expandable crew quarters, experiment chambers, and airlocksto determine how the application of such structures might enhance missionoperations of representative orbital vehicle configurations. Configurationsstudies were conducted and four candidate concepts were developed forevaluation. Materials studies were conducted to investigate the relativemerits of using an elastic recovery system or a chemically rigidized systemas the expandable structural materials. Parametric analysis and trade-offstudies were conducted to select an optimum configuration. The studiesindicated that the crew quarter, experiment chamber and airlock could bestbe designed as one integrated expandable structure module. (Author, modified-PL)
