As a result of federal railroad legislation in the 1970s, over 33,000 miles of rail lines were defined as 'light density lines.' A high percentage of these lines may be abandoned. However, some of the more active lines may be converted by private investors into short line railroads. The study examined the financial health of three active short line railroads to determine the financial success of their operations with an eye toward investment possibilities for other, similar short line railroads.
