Two groups of drivers drove in their own cars around part of a road research track and then from the track to the nearest town and back. One group consisted of 48 drivers convicted of careless driving while the other group consisted of 48 drivers chosen at random. As the subjects drove on the track and on the roads they attempted a series of tasks - adding groups of numbers, giving the opposites to lists of words and counting numbers of 'blips' of sound. The speeds at which the subjects drove were also noted. The object of the test was to discover any significant difference in task capability while driving between these two groups of drivers, whatever the task, both on the track and under normal traffic conditions.
