Twenty-four pilots participated in a low level flight helicopter simulation to examine the effects of semi-reliable hazard cueing on pilots awareness of the location of ground hazards. Pilots flew 6 low level, curved flights by reference to guidance cues on a perspective electronic map, and viewed the far domain projected on a 2 screen Evans and Sutherland (E&S) system. Their simulated exploration mission directed them to fly on a flight path, and altitude that brought them into close proximity with a series of map-depicted ground hazards (towers, power lines and terrain features) along with weather patterns. In addition, pilots occasionally encountered (and were requested to report) weather balloons that were NOT depicted on the map, but faintly visible in the far domain (E&S screen).
