The inexpensive and cost effective small satellite research program at the University of Surrey (U.K.) is described, focusing on the experience gained from the design, construction and seven years of orbital operation of two small spacecraft launched into polar, Sun synchronous, low Earth orbit by NASA in 1981 and 1984. Details of two new low cost spacecraft due for launch on Ariane are summarized.
