A need for trainer systems to develop the Naval Commander's shiphandling competence during low speed mooring and docking maneuvers motivated this analog computer study of low speed destroyer motion which incorporates hull hydrodynamic reactions, current effects, propeller and rudder contributions, hull inertial hydrodynamic reactions, shallow water effects, and hull aerodynamic reactions. This study is the first of its kind to be made, as dynamic motion equations for low speed ship maneuvers were nonexistent prior to the inception of the project. The report documents the initial phase of the study. Low speed destroyer motion equations were mechanized on the computer. Test results of simulated low speed destroyer maneuvers were recorded for analysis. The computer simulation was incorporated into an experimental, computer-activated, mooring and docking visual display system to investigate and provide design criteria for a training device which will realistically reproduce the trainee's environment.
