The feasibility of replacing the tail rotor of a simple helicopter by using fixed aerodynamic surfaces immersed in the rotor wake is examined analytically. Besides furnishing control moments, the major requirements of such surfaces would be to balance the main rotor drive torque. The most challenging flight condition for attaining torque balance is liftoff wherein the rotor torque is high and the dynamic pressure of the wake flow, which provides the energy for the antitorque surfaces, is lowest due to ground effect.
