The Navy is currently engaged in a comprehensive, long-term effort to review its ship maintenance strategies, requirements, and resources for all classes of surface ships. Called the Ship Support Improvement Project, the purpose is to develop an overall, integrated ship maintenance system to improve the material condition of ships. This report to the House Committee on Appropriations gives some insight on the Navy's approach to the $644 million project and identifies several potential problem areas which, unless closely watched, could affect the success of the project. The report also identifies specific project areas where the Navy has not done sufficient work to justify current budget requests.
