This report addresses guideway/vehicle concepts and guideway/treadway materials. It is primarily concerned with rubber-tired vehicles on reinforced concrete guideways wherein ice and/or snow accumulation on the guideway surface impairs the normal operation of the vehicle by loss of traction. A major objective of this study is to identify and investigate feasible concepts for improving or modifying guideway designs to minimize the debilitating effects of ice and snow for automated guideway systems. A secondary objective includes a state-of-the-art literature review on physical properties of reinforced concrete with emphasis on ice and snow removal technology.
