Static aerodynamic characteristics of winged space vehicles are investigated through a series of wind tunnel tests. A summary of the test results and associated considerations are included. The tests were conducted and supported by the Working Group for Winged Space Vehicles of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). Attention was concentrated on both longitudinal and lateral/directional, high angle of attack flight capability at the high speed flight conditions of the vehicle for the accomplishment of the reentry flight, so that three types of tail configurations are investigated (single, double, and tip-fin configurations). Test results are summarized in terms of aerodynamic coefficients and their derivatives. Discussions based on the test results are made to find out the relations between vehicle configuration and various aerodynamic and flight dynamics characteristics, which compare the high angle of attack flight criteria of current high-performance aircrafts.
