Design approaches were synthesized into two major design principles: Redundancy of Mode and Separation of Function. The objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of these two principles when utilized in the design of rear lighting systems. The study was divided into three major tasks: the evaluation of redundancy of mode; the evaluation of separation of function; and the development and evaluation of animation film techniques for use as simulation displays.
