Mission Objectives The primary objective of the SMM Retrieval Mission is to conduct a technological demonstration and proof of capability in-flight test for satellite retrieval via the STS. This will be accomplished through sequential hardware and operational procedure validation using the SMM Multimission Modular Spacecraft (MMS), the Flight Support System (FSS), and the STS Orbiter. The Proof of Capability/Validation will consist of the following activities: 1. FSS-to-STS cargo bay pre-launch integration and checkout 2. SMM attitude control and retrieval safe-hold verification 3. STS rendezvous maneuvers and associated proximity operations with the 3-axis stabilized spacecraft 4. RMS capture of the SMM through MMS interfacing hardware 5. MMS -to-FS S berthing operations 6. Spacecraft safing via FSS and STS Command and Control functions 7. Stowing of the SMM in the FSS retention cradle, with subsequent STS safety preparations for deorbit with the retrieval payload 8. STS/SMM deorbit and landing 9. Post-landing operational handling of reusable-type spacecraft and Shuttle interfacing hardware (the FSS) 10. Health assessment of MMS/SMM after deorbit. Based on a review of the assessed performance of the Solar Maximum Repair Mission, conducted on April 6, 1984, with STS-11, this mission is adjudged successful according to prerepair mission objectives as stated above.
