An experimental study of the power generating characteristics of Savonius rotors towed through still water was made. Variations in rotor geometry were investigated. Power absorption, drag and side force were measured on six rotors tested in the towing tank over a range of ratios of rotor vane tip peripheral speed divided by rotor advance speed from the free-running to the locked rotor conditions. Results indicate that the Savonius rotor is not as effective at extracting the available power from a stream of moving water of a given cross-section area as a conventional propeller type windmill.
