Text from an opening lecture at the Paris Aeronautical Internation Congress, June 1977, is presented. The central argument is that optimization of aircraft design can not be based only on energy conservation, other factors being important. Several graphs are given referring to various technical and economical situations. The conclusions are that sound aircraft design must take into account factors or market competitivity and passenger's preferences, and that some logical energy conserving ideas are, for instance modern turboprop for mach 0.6/0.7; short/medium distances straight wing jet for mach 0.75; innovation either in systems or structure, permitting weight reduction, and optimization of air traffic for minimal energy expenditure.
