The Cincinnati ridesharing demonstration project (Project Rideshare) began in May 1980 to promote carpooling, vanpooling, and transit usage through the three-state area of greater Cincinnati. Key elements of the demonstration included employer-, community-, and region-based promotion. Analysis of a stratified sample of 180 employers and 2700 employees found little association between employer or Project Rideshare promotion and ridesharing. Employer size was the most important factor investigated. Most ridesharing appeared to occur for economic reasons, though convenience and social factors were also important.
