Oceanographic operations were conducted aboard U.S. Navy ships during the UNITAS IX cruise around South America. The cruise began in mid-July and lasted until the end of October 1968. Six Nansen cast stations were taken in tropical regions close to the coast of Brazil, and bathythermograph and bathymetric observations were made throughout the cruise. (Author)
