This is the first of four volumes of the contract final report, which summarizes all of the work performed in a government-sponsored Automotive Gas Turbine Development Program. In this first volume of the contract final report, results are presented from tests which were conducted on a Baseline Engine to document the Automotive Gas Turbine State-of-the-Art at the start of the program and to evaluate certain component improvement concepts. The documentation consisted of defining the performance characteristics of the engine and of a vehicle powered by this engine. Component improvements in the Baseline Engine were to be evaluated on engine dynamometer tests, in the complete vehicle on a chassis dynamometer, and on road tests. These concepts included: advanced combustors, ceramic regenerators, an integrated control system, low-cost turbine material, a continuously variable transmission, power-turbine-driven accessories, power augmentation, and linerless insulation in the engine housing. Successful verification of improvements was to be the basis of upgrading the engine by incorporating these technology advancements in a new design called the Upgraded Engine.
