The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is planning to consolidate En Route and Terminal facilities into Area Control Facilities (ACF), and to develop an Advanced Automation System (AAS) capable of supporting extensive automation of Air Traffic Control (ATC) functions. One of the design issues is the selection of a coordinate system(s) for the computation associated with the different functions. The document presents the rationale for the stereographic projection equations now in use in the National Airspace System and the errors associated with the approximations in radar data processing.
