An investigation was conducted at the David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center Carriage III Facility to determine performance characteristics of a power-augmented-ram wing-in-ground-effect vehicle. The model was the first statically stable vehicle to be operated free in heave and pitch with excess thrust. The power-augmented-ram vehicle successfully accomplished a static takeoff at the extremely low thrust-to-weight ratio of 0.173. The model was able to accelerate through hump at a vehicle density of 2 lb/cu ft (32 kg/cu m); this is a higher density than in any previous test. Trimming moments were supplied by one of several aerodynamic/hydrodynamic control surfaces. The best performance was obtained using a large 40-deg deadrise, 'V' shaped, planing tail. (Author)
