The concept of an Air-Transportable Expeditionary Crane (ATEC) must satisfy a few important mission requirements. That is, it must be transported via helicopter to an unimproved expeditionary site. It must be deployed quickly with a minimum of personnel. It must be able to acquire and mobilize 23(star) (25 ton) ISO containers across rough terrain. It should be able to stack containers two high. And lastly, it should perform a number of tasks associated with constructing a landing strip for cargo aircraft in an expeditionary environment. In order to accomplish these rigorous goals, a successful ATEC design must balance structural ruggedness against weight, overall size against transportability and cargo stability against dexterity.
