The objective of the program is to demonstrate that transportation problems in an intensely developed corridor of an urban area can be effectively alleviated through implementation of innovative solutions. In Louisville the Corridor chosen was the South Corridor. This Corridor is an area which extends nine miles from the Louisville Central Business District. The Corridor lacks a freeway to serve the predominant north-south traffic movement. The planning approach employed in the corridor was to solve the transportation problems in Louisville's South Corridor by (1) Improving vehicular flow by traffic engineering improvements and street widenings and extensions and by (2) Improving usage of transit facilities by increasing bus service, providing for priority operation of buses, fringe parking, bus shelters, and a transit public information program.
